These have appeared recently at New Sagaya Market in Anchorage. It’s a Buddha’s Hand citron, basically a swirly lemon. It’s all skin and pith though. There’s no fruit inside.
According to the LA Times, there are about 25 acres of these now being grown in California:
- The fruit is powerfully aromatic, with a characteristic aroma of violets or osmanthus. It’s primary use here is ornamental... but the rind is also used to make jam and to flavor spirits.

I don’t know about osmanthus, but it does have a bit of a violet scent happening.
I had a great idea to put one in a clear Mason jar of vodka and let it infuse for a month or so with a few sugar cubes, but it seems someone else already thought of that. There’s no watery pulp inside, so it should be great for infusing in alcohol.
$4.99/lb.
